WHAT ARE COOKIES?

A cookie is a small amount of data that usually has a unique stamp on it. This data is sent from a web server to your browser and stored there on your hard disk so that the site can recognize your computer. All sites can send cookies to your browser if your browser settings allow. In order for this information not to be misused, websites may only read information from cookies saved by themselves and not any cookies stored by other websites.

There are two types of cookies, permanent and temporary (sessionscookies). Permanent cookies are stored as a file on your computer for a long period of time. Session cookies are temporarily placed on your computer when you visit a website, but disappear when you close down, meaning they are not permanently saved on your computer. Most companies use cookies on their websites to improve usability and cookies can not harm your files or increase the risk of viruses on your computer.

As a user, you have the option of setting cookies to be automatically saved in your browser, if you want to be prompted each time a cookie is to be saved or if you do not want cookies to be saved. Cookies are used on many websites, to keep track of whether the browser has visited the site before and what choices have been made. A check is made on each visit to the site if cookies are stored in the browser or not. If there are no stored cookies from the site, the browser saves the cookies on the site.

Further information about cookies can be found on the National Post and Telecom Agency’s website, www.pts.se.
